ANDPA Statement addressing autism misinformation and affirming Autistic leadership
The Alliance for Neurodiversity and Disability in GLAMR Professions Australia Inc. (ANDPA) remains committed to uplifting the voices of neurodivergent and disabled GLAMR professionals.
With national and international public discourse this year promoting unfounded claims about the cause of autism and ill-advised language regarding support needs, we emphasise our solidarity with the Autistic community and Autistic colleagues.
Many of the claims and misinformation reinforce systemic barriers and deficit narratives that marginalise and stigmatise the Autistic community. We also recognise the gendered impact of these claims and policy initiatives.
The principle of ‘Nothing about us, without us’ requires not only listening to Autistic people but centring their leadership. Autistic voices consistently communicate a desire for acceptance and support to thrive as they are, rather than for prevention or cures.
ANDPA advocates for the use of credible evidence, appropriately interpreted and contextualised, with meaningful leadership from and partnership with the Autistic community. This evidence must be directed towards improving the lives of Autistic people and addressing the barriers they have identified, including access to employment and workplace inclusion.
We send our solidarity to Autistic GLAMR professionals in Australia and internationally and emphasise support for the belonging and acceptance of Autistic people.
